You have the right to have any debt you owe reported accurately. If you dispute that a debt is yours or that it is being reported accurately, that should be noted on your credit report. If a credit company, debt collector or credit reporting agency fails to update your report, you may have a claim under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”) which regulates how debts are reported, how disputes should be handled by various agencies, as well as how companies can inquire about your credit history. If a company does not accurately report your debt it can negatively affect your credit score.
You have the right to a free copy of your credit report, once every 12 months, through the Annual Credit Report Request Service. You can order your free report at www.annualcreditreport.com. Call Geier Law for additional information.
